Spain must assume its responsibilities in regard to Western Sahara conflict (European deputy)

Seville (Spain), Nov 5, 2011 (SPS) - “The EU cannot bear the responsibilities on the question of Western Sahara, unless Spain assumes its legal and historic responsibilities towards its old colonies,” stated Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Willy Meyer.

“We must put an end the current situation of the EU after it found itself out of the only stuck issue in the African continent, which is about decolonization,” Mr. Meyer told Spain News Agency (EFE) following a ceremony held outside the Moroccan Consulate in Seville.

The EU deputy regretted to the fact that Morocco does not want witnesses in the occupied part of Western Sahara, so that its police can do what it wants without punishment where there is no value for the international law.

“According to the international law, Morocco is an occupied power and have no sovereignty on Western Sahara,” he recalled, emphasizing “we will not abandon the Saharawi people whatever the circumstances.”

He reaffirmed that his party will continue working to break the silence on the Saharawi people cause and to confront the Moroccan government practices, which remains unpunished, calling on the Spanish parties to take unique position in regard to the question of Western Sahara within their electoral programmes.
