Western Sahara: Morocco, driven back by the international community
The ras-le-bol of the international community was clearly expressed by the British Foreign Minister, William Hague during his working visit to Algeria.
In an interview with the Algerian daily El Khabar and in response to a question about Great Britain position on the Western Sahara conflict and how to solve it, Mr Hague said that "the status quo in the Western Sahara conflict has a negatif effects on the entire region. It hinders the establishment of an effective regional cooperation. I support the UN efforts to find a way to satisfy both parties and ensures the right of self-determination for the Saharawi people. I hope that these efforts lead to the resolution of this conflict that has lasted longer than was needed. As for the Arab spring, we emphasized with the EU for support under the new policy European Neighbourhood achieving economic integration with the countries of North Africa. "
In another interview published today by the newspaper Liberté, MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, said that the conflict between SADR in Morocco is a "problem that was not solved for many decades. Then, we have to push for the resumption of negotiations and ensure that the UN can achieve positive results. The European Parliament is ready to ensure that the Western Sahara issue be tackled to record positive steps to resolve this problem. This is a topic on which we are very interested and on which we focus on our visit in early November. Moreover, as President of the Maghreb Delegation, I will not stop in Algiers as well go to Tindouf. "
As for it, the 4th Committee of the General Assembly United Nations on decolonization adopted October 10 a resolution reaffirming the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence.
Recalling the formal and informal meetings held between the Polisario Front and Morocco since 2007, the resolution "calls on all parties and States of the region to cooperate fully with the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy and with each others, "reaffirming" the responsibility of the United Nations towards the people of Western Sahara ".
The EU mission said before the vote on the resolution on Western Sahara in the context of the Committee on Decolonization in New York, encouraging both parties to work to achieve this solution within the UN expressing the same support to the efforts of Christopher Ross, personal envoy of UN Secretary-General.
