The Chief of Staff of the PNA, Salah Ahmed Gaid, began yesterday in the wilaya of Tindouf a visit that was scheduled for several days, during which he will visit units of the Army stationed at the border, as part of the efforts of the Ministry of Defence to secure the border strip from Mauritania to Libya.

The chief of staff will receive reports on the effectiveness of measures put in place for operational side of the plan of “urgency” of the army of border control, in light of developments on the front on the border with Libya. The sources said the Ministry of Defence said it was necessary to review the work of the military throughout the border area to avoid an “imbalance” of the military performance after the transfer of a large number of military and logistics at the Algerian-Libyan border.

General Salah Ahmed Gaid began with visiting military units in the province of Tindouf, as part of a program that will include all units stationed near the border regions. Reliable sources told El Khabar that the Ministry of Defence had put all their forces to the border area south of Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Libya, in a state of permanent alert. The visit of the Chief of Staff had been decided for several days to inspect the work of the units stationed in the southwest of the Sahara responsible for monitoring the border strip, and the fight against terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking.

Gaid Salah’s visit to the region coincided with the announcement by the Government Saharawi the kidnapping of three tourists by a terrorist group, which suggests that AQIM is trying to expand its operations at the western Sahel, after realizing he could not extend beyond the border between Algeria and Mauritania.
